The Best Steak Gyro Recipe
I don’t know what it is about gyros, but they are just kinda nostalgic to me. Growing up our family was always on the move. We were either going to my volleyball practice or to my brothers soccer practice and sometimes to both. Honestly, I don’t know how my parents did it!

With all the hustle and bustle, quick family friendly meals were a must! My mom definitely had a few go to’s, just like I do now. But one of my favorites was when it was gyro night! She would pick up the sliced lamb meat and container of tzatziki sauce, I would set up shop and go to town.

Now that I’m all grown up I get to make my own take on things and these Grilled Steak Gyros are it! Tender Juicy Steak rubbed with a Mediterranean Spice Blend then seared to perfection and placed in a toasted pita topped with homemade tzatziki sauce! Y’all my mouth is drooling just talking about it!

What Are Gyros?
A gyro is a Greek sandwich, pronounced YEE-ROH, normally made with cooked lamb, beef, or pork. It is served on pita bread and topped with tomato, onion, and a cucumber yogurt sauce. A gyro is very similar to shawarma but the main difference being the meat preparation and how it is served. Shawarma is usually marinated for a long time and sometimes in a yogurt marinade and served in chunks instead of shaved or thinly sliced.

What is the Best Cut of Meat to Use for a Steak Gyro?
The best cuts of beef to use for a quick gyro are new york strip steak, ribeye, filet mignon (if you really want flavor and price isn’t an issue), top sirloin or flank steak.

In today’s recipe I went the new york strip route, I didn’t want as much marbleization as a ribeye and wanted it a little more tender than flank steak. It turned out a great and I had plenty of steak to feed a hungry crowd of four, plus some!

In my humble opinion, gyros live and die by the sauce that’s on them. I’ve made a couple different Tzatziki Sauce’s in my day, even made a yogurt free one –> check out my Avocado Tzatziki. But this one is my favorite recipe thus far!

How to Make Homemade Tzatziki Gyro Sauce?
To a small bowl, add 1/2 cup of plain greek yogurt, 1/4 cup grated cucumber (squeeze slightly to juice), 1 tablespoon of lemon juice, 1/2 teaspoon dry dill, 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder and salt. Stir together and set aside.

It’s amazing, in fact, just go ahead a make a double batch because your humans will want extra. Trust me!

What I love about this Steak Gyro Recipe is it’s great year round. Sure I grilled it today, but if you’re feeling it in the winter just add the steak to a skillet instead of the grill. It’s a quick meal that everyone in the family will love and you will too because it comes together in 30 minutes!

So whether or a gyro fanatic or a gyro “virgin”, this needs to be on your list to make! Because honestly, you can’t get better than tender steak on a warm pita bread loaded with veggies and creamy cucumber tzatziki sauce. Go get the ingredients and I’ll see you in the kitchen!

Bon Appetit friends!
